A Multimeter to the Rescue

by Lenny Rudow
The connector on my GPS data cable extension got crushed, so I cut it off, planning to make a new one. Unfortunately, I forgot to check which colored wire went to which pin. Is there some way to figure out which wire goes to which pin?

Yes, all you need is a multimeter, set to ohms. Attach one of the meter`s probes to the end of a stripped wire from the male cable end, and put the other probe into the female connector`s holes one at a time. (Attach a paper clip to the end of the probe if it`s too thick to fit inside the connector holes.) When you match the wire to the correct hole, the meter will read zero. Mark it, and then move on to the next wire.
