Part-time Starter Problem

by Lenny Rudow
I have an intermittent problem with the starter on my port engine. Sometimes it spins but doesn`t crank the engine. If I wait a few minutes it usually works fine, but each time I try it`s a roll of the dice. Any ideas?

It sounds like the starter pinion isn`t mating up with the flywheel. The pinion gear drive could be corroded. More likely, however, a bad connection at the battery cables or solenoid is slowing the starter down so the pinion isn`t shooting up to engage the flywheel. First, try cleaning these connections. If that doesn`t work, you`ll have to remove the starter and clean off the pinion gear drive.
