20 Degrees Warmer

I have two, 4.3 GM raw-water coolers in my Bayliner. The port engine has suddenly started running 20 degrees warmer than the starboard. It doesn’t increase, just runs 185 degrees instead of 165.Where do I start checking?

With something like this, a specific number, it’s always good to start with a verification of what the engine is actually showing, using a temperature gun. Take your reading at the thermostat housing at the sender. If the port engine actually is 20 degrees warmer, then start isolating areas that could be potential problems — thermostat, fuel cooler, manifold — and comparing them to the starboard engine. If the port engine is 20 degrees warmer overall, you may be looking at a water pump impeller. However, if both engines are the same temperature, you could have a bad sender or gauge.
