Wanna Bet?

by Lenny Rudow
Can you settle a bet? My friend says his VHF range is better than mine because he has a 9dB antenna and mine’s 6dB. I don’t see how power can be affected by the antenna, so I say the range is the same. Who’s right?

Both of you and neither of you. He is correct that a higher dB does increase an antenna’s effective radiated power. However, when it comes to marine VHF radios and range, the limiting factor will almost always be antenna height, not power. Call the bet a wash.
