Dripless Filter Changes

Print This Article   |   Email This Article

When changing the oil filter on a boat's engine, it's hard not to make a mess -- and it seems downright impossible to keep things clean if the filter (like most) is mounted on an angle. As you unscrew the filter, oil dribbles out over the engine, onto your hands and into the bilge.

The solution is to buy a supply of zipper lock-type plastic bags large enough to hold the entire filter.

Once you've loosened the oil filter enough to unscrew it by hand, slip the bag over the filter and push it up far enough to completely enclose the filter. Continue spinning until the filter is free, wait a moment for any stray droplets to fall from the filter mounting, then remove the entire tidy package.

Seal it up, then dispose of the bag properly, at your leisure.
